TEAM LEADER/READING SPECIALIST (RESULT 1)


Chemonics seeks a team leader/reading specialist for the anticipated USAID-funded Tanzania TusomePamoja ("Let's Read Together" in Kiswahili) Program to improve lifelong learning skills, defined as mastery of early grade reading, writing, and arithmetic. The five-year, $60 to $70-million program is expected to support four regions of Tanzania in improving quality of basic skills instruction at the early primary level, strengthening Ministry of Education and Vocational Training skills delivery systems, and increasing community and parental engagement in early primary education. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. 
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Support program staff on essential components of reading programs -- including review of scope and sequence, lesson planning, instructional approach, teacher professional development, materials development and distribution, classroom-level assessment, and large-scale assessment -- to develop highly effective activities and integrate them for maximum effectiveness at the program level
  • Provide support for design of effective curriculum, lesson planning, instructional approaches, and materials for varied language settings
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of effective teacher professional development programs, including teacher preparation, induction and in-service programs, and supportive supervision focused on primary grade reading, curriculum design, and materials development for early grade reading
  • Support other specialists on the team to ensure coherent program design
  • Contribute knowledge of effective school research findings and practices that are applicable to developing country contexts
  • Work directly with language experts as appropriate to implement this program.
Qualifications:
  • Master's or Ph.D.-level degree in education, psychology, social sciences, or other relevant field with at least five years of experience conducting similar work; or bachelor's degree and 10 years of relevant experience
  • Experience working on education programs of similar size and scope as Tusome Pamoja 
  • Proven ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with senior government personnel, particularly in Tanzania
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in the education sector, with deep understanding of scientifically based reading research
  • Knowledge of a balanced literacy framework, early literacy competencies, and reading diagnostic measures
  • Expertise in student assessment, including ability to measure basic foundation skills for literacy in the early grades
  • Knowledge of mother tongue and English transition instruction strategies
  • Experience implementing interventions that promote gender equity preferred
  • Technical expertise in basic education and early grade reading
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Strong English writing and speaking skills 
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
