COURT RECORDER/TRANSCRIBER : East African Court of Justice

COURT RECORDER/TRANSCRIBER

(REF: EAC/HR/2013/072)

GRADE: P1

ORGAN: East African Court of Justice

DEPARTMENT: Finance and Administration

REPORTS TO:    Deputy Registrar

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:

To record and transcribe Court proceedings and maintain Court recording system

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Attend hearings, proceedings, and other events that require written transcripts

2. Transcribe verbatim court proceedings

3. Prepare and proofread transcripts and records to ensure the accurate use of language, verifying spellings and citations

4. Read or play back all or a portion of the proceedings upon request from the Judge, the Registrar or the Deputy Registrar

5. Provide copies of transcripts to the court, counsels, and parties involved under guidance of the Registrar or the Deputy Registrar

6. Obtain all sources of references to ensure accurate reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

A Degree in Law/Journalism/Secretarial Studies or equivalent qualification from a recognized University with not less than five (5) years of experience in Court reporting/transcribing, or similar experience in Parliament or international organizations.

Duration of Contract: Five (5) years, renewable.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

Professional staff positions are tenable for a contract of five (5) years renewable once, while the general staff positions are tenable for five (5) years renewable until mandatory retirement age of 60 years subject satisfactory conduct and performance.

All positions are subject to the application of the Quota System .

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

All candidates applying must have qualifications that are recognised by the relevant national accreditation body in their respective countries. This condition is applicable for locally and internationally attained qualifications.

All professions that require registration with the specific professional bodies will be expected to do so in compliance with the requirements of their respective countries. Examples include: Accountants, Auditors, Engineers, Procurement Specialists, and Medical Personnel.

RELEVANT WORKING EXPERIENCE

Relevant working experience in this regard refers to post education work experience. Internship, training, apprenticeship and clerkship will not be considered as relevant work experience. The same will apply for any experience attained before professional certification where relevant.
