Controversial Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) Chairman who was arrested Thursday morning for causing disturbance at the Kilimani Police division has been released.
Babu Owino had stormed the police station Thursday 7:30am, accompanied by a group of youth who reportedly insulted officers on duty.
Police said that Owino demanded the release of controversial businessman Chris Obure, who was on Wednesday apprehended for allegedly misusing a firearm.
Owino, however, refutes the reports, saying he had gone to demand the release of a fellow university student who was arrested on Wednesday evening for being drunk and disorderly outside a popular entertainment joint in Kilimani.
“No, I did not go to demand the release of Chris Obure. Police in Kilimani had arrested a comrade last evening on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. I mobilized several youth, who accompanied me to the station, where we demanded that the right procedure be followed in apprehending our fellow student.
“However, officers on duty harassed us, which made me lose my cool and slap one of them. That is when I was arrested,” Babu Owino exclusively told eDaily.
The controversial student leader was on Thursday arraigned in Kibera Law Courts with causing disturbance at the Kilimani Police Station.
He was released on KSh5, 000 cash bail.
I was the target of two-term limit law: Owino
Owino also spoke on a law which was signed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in December 2016, barring him from seeking re-election as University of Nairobi student union chairman.
President Kenyatta had assented to Universities Amendment Act 2016, which disqualifies a student council member from serving for more than two terms.
This means that a student leader will only serve for a year and be legible for re-election just once.
Babu Owino, born Paul Ongili, has held SONU Chair post since 2011. His last election resulted in chaos after his closest rival Mike Jacobs disputed the results.
Well, Owino thinks the law assented to by the Head of State was “targeting him”.
“I don’t think it is a good law, the President shouldn’t have assented to it. You see, you cannot make law to target just one person. There is no term limit for parliamentarians seeking re-election, why should students not be allowed to exercise democracy in a similar manner?
“I did not and do not intend to run again for SONU Chair. In August 2017 I will vie for Embakasi East legislative seat. So, the two-term limit for students’ organization chair law would not affect me in any way. But, how I wish comrades were given a chance to represent their colleagues until the colleagues think otherwise,” Babu Owino said.
