United opposition will trounce Jubilee, note Cord MPs

The opposition can oust the Jubilee administration from power if it remains united, leaders allied to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have said.
Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti said the opposition has the capacity to send Jubilee parking after the August polls.
Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi said Jubilee with its dented image on corruption has no capacity to retain power after August.
"Jubilee has no chance in the coming elections, that is not in doubt," he said as quoted by the Star.
"The only variable is its margin of loss. In any case, the twin issues of corruption and tribalism sealed Jubilee’s fate long before NASA’s birth.”
Gladys Wanga, the Homa Bay County Women Representative said Jubilee was already in panic mode.
"The opposition’s unity is disastrous to Jubilee. It is in the public domain that if the August elections are conducted transparently, NASA will beat Jubilee hands down,” she said.
Suba MP John Mbadi said the opposition has the required numbers to capture power.
Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire said Jubilee's bad reputation about corruption would make it difficult to garner votes and remain in power.

Man kills mother, surrenders to police

A 22-year-old man in Mt Elgon killed his mother over a Sh6 000 debt and later surrendered to police.
Daniel Karam of Kaptogoi village surrendered to Chepsikaai Police Station on Thursday after authorities began looking for him following the murder.
The fight reportedly began when Karam asked his 61-year-old mother Grace Mbiwa to refund some Sh6 000 she owed him.
“Daniel Karam had heard that [his] mother had sold coffee and he thought she had money. But his mother had not received the money [as] he thought. He had asked the mother to pay him or face consequences,” said witness Jacob Munyasia as reported by the Star.
The mother denied having any cash.
This, according to police, prompted the suspect to go to a drinking spree from where he returned at around 8pm and summoned her outside.
The unsuspecting mother didn't know that he was armed with a panga and ready for assault.
“He hacked his mother several times on the head and residents were alerted by her screams... Who would dare kill his own mother? It is so unfortunate this had to happen,” added Munyasia.
When police arrived at the scene, they rushed the woman to Bungoma District Hospital but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her body has been taken to the Bungoma District Hospital mortuar

Babu Owino speaks out after dramatic arrest

Controversial Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) Chairman who was arrested Thursday morning for causing disturbance at the Kilimani Police division has been released.
Babu Owino had stormed the police station Thursday 7:30am, accompanied by a group of youth who reportedly insulted officers on duty.
Police said that Owino demanded the release of controversial businessman Chris Obure, who was on Wednesday apprehended for allegedly misusing a firearm.
Owino, however, refutes the reports, saying he had gone to demand the release of a fellow university student who was arrested on Wednesday evening for being drunk and disorderly outside a popular entertainment joint in Kilimani.
“No, I did not go to demand the release of Chris Obure. Police in Kilimani had arrested a comrade last evening on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. I mobilized several youth, who accompanied me to the station, where we demanded that the right procedure be followed in apprehending our fellow student.
“However, officers on duty harassed us, which made me lose my cool and slap one of them. That is when I was arrested,” Babu Owino exclusively told eDaily.
The controversial student leader was on Thursday arraigned in Kibera Law Courts with causing disturbance at the Kilimani Police Station.
He was released on KSh5, 000 cash bail.
I was the target of two-term limit law: Owino
Owino also spoke on a law which was signed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in December 2016, barring him from seeking re-election as University of Nairobi student union chairman.
President Kenyatta had assented to Universities Amendment Act 2016, which disqualifies a student council member from serving for more than two terms.
This means that a student leader will only serve for a year and be legible for re-election just once.
Babu Owino, born Paul Ongili, has held SONU Chair post since 2011. His last election resulted in chaos after his closest rival Mike Jacobs disputed the results.
Well, Owino thinks the law assented to by the Head of State was “targeting him”.
“I don’t think it is a good law, the President shouldn’t have assented to it. You see, you cannot make law to target just one person. There is no term limit for parliamentarians seeking re-election, why should students not be allowed to exercise democracy in a similar manner?
“I did not and do not intend to run again for SONU Chair. In August 2017 I will vie for Embakasi East legislative seat. So, the two-term limit for students’ organization chair law would not affect me in any way. But, how I wish comrades were given a chance to represent their colleagues until the colleagues think otherwise,” Babu Owino said.

Spend less this 2017

Image result for money
Here are some helpful tips to prevent you from getting into a pickle after the festive season.
Save! Save! Save!
This is probably the most logical solution to the problem of overspending.
Centonomy founder Waceke Nduati strongly advocates for saving especially when it comes to recreational activities.
“Identify the things you want to do, budget for those things and put money aside for them now,” she advises.
In other words, have a holiday budget so that when January creeps in you have a back-up plan.
Maximize on deals
Contrary to popular belief, taking up deals is actually not being cheap.
Beyond the Limit author and Residual Income coach Paddy Jayson Mwangi advises on maximizing on holiday deals to help relieve the need to overspend during the holidays.
“Plan to go on holidays as a group. Don’t just go on holiday by yourself. You can all pre-book for a holiday and negotiate as a group in terms of payment,”
Paddy further urges on the need to negotiate as a group so as to fully exploit the offer on the table to receive the best prices.
Stop inviting everyone at once
If you are planning a get together for the holidays, it is okay to not invite the entire community to your soiree.
“A good trick is not to invite everyone at once. Create a list of those people that you want to come and those that you can meet some other time besides the holiday season,” says Paddy Jayson.
By doing so you help reduce costs, stress levels and actually end up enjoying your party as the host which can be a rare luxury when you have to worry about a large number of people in your house.
Avoid places that are going to make you spend money
Hanging around places that tempt you to spend money is one of the reasons behind overspending.
“If you hang out in places like malls, chances are you are going to want to spend money,” says Ms Nduati
Ms Nduati advises on avoiding such places in order to reduce your chances of spending money that was not intended to be spent.
Focus on what is important
It has been a long year and you have not been able to interact with your loved ones properly- this is the time to do that.

Valentine Waiu, 16, was supposed to join Form Four this year at Oasis High School in Sultan Hamud in Makueni County
Ms Asekha says the second born in a family of two was supposed to join Form Four this year at Oasis High School in Sultan Hamud in Makueni County.
Ms Asekha revealed that prior to her disappearance, her daughter looked disturbed.
“I noted a change in my girl’s behaviour when she came home after closing school for December holidays. She did not look fine at all – often worried, kept to herself and was uncharacteristically dull. I enquired if she had a boyfriend, a relationship which could be affecting her emotionally and psychologically, but she said no,” the distraught mother recalled.
“I thereafter asked my sister to talk to her, but my daughter would maintain that she is well. I don’t know the circumstances which led to her disappearance, whether she was kidnapped or went into hiding, I don’t know what to think anymore,” she said further.
“I reported her disappearance at Umoja One police post under OB No.12/28/12/16, but authorities are yet to give me positive news. I went through my daughter’s phone log but there was no suggestive message or call history. I appeal to members of the public who could be having information about her whereabouts to report to any nearby police station,” said Valentine’s mum.

Iraq car bomb kills 11 in Baghdad

Interior ministry spokesman Saad Maan was quoted as saying a security guard fired on a suspicious vehicle and the driver then blew it up.
So-called Islamic State (IS) said it was behind the blast, in a statement on its Amaq news agency.
It is the latest of several targeting Shia Muslim districts of Baghdad. A similar attack on 2 January killed 35.
The latest attack struck the main vegetable market in the primarily Shia Muslim Sadr City district.
There has been an increase in IS bomb attacks on civilians since the group came under increasing pressure from government forces in the areas it controls in the north and west of Iraq.
Iraqi special forces and their Shia militia allies have been trying to drive IS from its stronghold in the northern city of Mosul. They entered eastern districts in November but IS have since slowed their advance towards the centre.
The group also targets areas populated by the Shia as it sees them as apostates.

Jerusalem lorry attack: Four Israelis soldiers killed

Three women and one man, all in their twenties, were killed and 17 others were wounded, police said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attacker, who was shot dead by soldiers, was a suspected supporter of so-called Islamic State.
But the prime minister gave no evidence to support the claim.
The victims, three army cadets and one officer, were taking part in an educational trip. the Israeli military said.
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat called on residents not to "let terror win" and said militants would "pay a heavy price".
"There is no limit to the cruelty of the terrorists who are willing to use any means possible to murder Jews and to damage the life routine of Israel's capital," he said.
The US state department condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms" and the European Union also issued a condemnation.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas praised the attacker. Hamas spokesman Abdul-Latif Qanou called it a "heroic" act and encouraged other Palestinians to "escalate the resistance".
Before this latest incident, 35 Israelis had been killed in a wave of knife, gun and car-ramming attacks by Palestinians or Israeli Arabs since October 2015.
More than 200 Palestinians - mostly attackers, Israel says - have also been killed in that period.
Israel says Palestinian incitement has fuelled the attacks. The Palestinian leadership has blamed frustration rooted in decades of Israeli occupation.
The BBC's Yolande Knell in Jerusalem says the number of attacks had begun to subside in recent months, but Sunday's incident is one of the most serious there has been.

S Korea monk self immolates in WW2 Japan sex slavery

The 64-year-old man suffered third-degree burns and remains unconscious in hospital, officials say.
He set himself alight during a protest against President Park Geun-hye and left a note accusing her of "treason".
The march in Seoul marks the 11th week of rallies against Ms Park, who has been embroiled in a separate scandal.
So-called "comfort women" from South Korea who were forced to work in Japanese military brothels during World War Two.
In 2015 the countries agreed that compensations and an apology would "finally and irreversibly" resolve the matter.
But critics have said the deal does not go far enough in holding Japan responsible for wartime abuses.

On Sunday Prime Minister Shinzo Abe demanded the removal of the statue from outside its consulate in the South Korean city of Busan.
"The South Korean side should show its sincerity,'' he said on Japanese TV. He said the 2015 agreement should be implemented regardless of leadership change as a "matter of credibility".
At the time of the deal, 46 former "comfort women" were still alive in South Korea.
In December, Ms Park was forced to step back from her duties after weeks of protests led to her impeachment. But demonstrators are calling for her full removal from office.
The scandal-hit president is accused of allowing a close friend to profit from her parliamentary connections.
The accusations centre on her relationship with a long-time friend, Choi Soon-sil, who faces charges of coercion and abuse of power.
It is alleged that after Ms Park became president in 2013, Ms Choi, 60, used their friendship to pressure companies into donating to foundations she controlled, and then siphoned off funds for her own gain.
Prosecutors are also investigating allegations that Ms Choi sent dubious assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars overseas.

Mohamed Dewji ‘Mo’ and Yusuph Manji are back in the limelight to steer the Dar es Salaam

AFTER going silent for a couple of weeks, business tycoons Mohamed Dewji ‘Mo’ and Yusuph Manji are back in the limelight to steer the Dar es Salaam derby between Simba and Young Africans.

Dewji and Manji hit headlines last month after they launched bids to takeover the country’s top clubs, Simba and Young Africans. Mohamed Dewji (MO) tabled a 20bn/- bid to take 51 per cent shares at Simba after the Reds officially endorsed managerial restructuring of the club early in August.
Yanga followed the suit by unanimously approving a move to lease their club to their Chairman Manji, who was eventually given mandate to own the club for ten years.
Complications in both deals have somewhat stalled the tycoons’ ambitions from taking off and the two are appearing to seize the upcoming derby by once again pushing their ‘takeover’ agenda with lucrative last minute’s offers to their respective clubs. It was announced yesterday that Dewji, one of Africa’s young billionaires, has started paying salaries to players, technical bench members and the secretariat of Simba.
The move comes after previous sponsor, Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) pulled out following the expiry of its 3-year contract. In a statement issued by Simba management yesterday, the club expressed their gratitude to Dewji and commended him for fulfilling promises he made to the club when launching his takeover bid. “Dewji has started paying salaries to players, members of the technical bench and the secretariat of the club and he will be doing that for the rest of the transition period towards the club’s restructuring plan,” Simba’s Spokesperson Haji Manara said.
Dewji will also cater for the club’s other administrative cost and pay tax for artificial turfs which will be laid at Simba’s stadium, currently under construction in Bunju area. “Simba management is very grateful to MO, considering that the club has no sponsor at the moment and we believe this investment is the catalyst to bring back happiness to Simba supporters by winning this year’s league championship and for many years to come,” Manara said.
Manji, on the other hand took a bold move to solve Yanga’s ground problems by offering the club a 715-acre land at Kigamboni shoreline in the city to construct a state-of-the-art stadium.
The land’s handover ceremony took part on Wednesday and was graced by the Minister for Home Affairs, Mwigulu Nchemba and Zanzibar’s former First Lady, Fatuma Karume. Manji did not attend the event and it was the businessman’s aides who handed over the land to the chairperson of Yanga’s Trustees Council, Mama Karume.
Speaking during the event, Mama Karume said the decision to offer the club the land for stadium construction was arrived at a meeting between members of the Trustees Council and Yanga Chairman Manji.
“After the members pleaded for a new stadium during the general assembly, we sat down with the chairman and agreed about this issue,” the former Isles First Lady said. For his side, Nchemba, who is an ardent supporter of the reigning Mainland Premier League champions, revealed that he advised Manji to abandon plans to develop Kaunda Stadium located at the club’s headquarters and instead look for another suitable area.

“I told Manji to keep thinking about Kaunda ground is to lie to ourselves. While our fellows (Simba) are moving to Bunju, we should go to Kigamboni,” Nchemba said.

Interesting news about TAZARA flyover

THE Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Prof Makame Mbarawa, has called upon the contractor of the long awaited Tazara flyover to fast-track the project aimed at eliminating congestion in Dar es Salaam.

Prof Mbarawa made the call in the city yesterday during his tour of the project at the junction of Nelson Mandela Expressway and Nyerere Road.
"Although this work is scheduled to be completed in 2018, we are pushing the contractor, Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Company (SMCC) to complete it before the contractual period to allow our people to use the facility," Prof Mbarawa said.
Prof Mbarawa added: "This is the first flyover to be built in our country, many of them will be constructed in future, but this one is so crucial for our lives. This is why we are pushing for the work to be completed in time.
He, however, called upon road users including pedestrians and motorists to be patient in case of they encounter inconveniences as the contractor implements the project.
The Resident Engineer from Oriental Consultants Global, Mr Kiyokazu Tsuji, said that the project has so far been implemented by 13.7 per cent.
He said that they are confident of completing the work as planned because the progress achieved by September, this year, corresponds with their work plan. He said that the preparations for actual construction of flyover were underway and the work is set to begin soon.
Funded by Japanese government through grant aid, the project is expected to cost US $45m upon completion.
According to the contract the three-year project is scheduled to be completed in October 2018. Meanwhile, Prof Mbarawa visited the new bridge at Buguruni area across Mandela Road which has been completed by 95 per cent.
He said the government decided to construct the bridge following the number of accidents in the area.
"More than 5,000 people were crossing this area, thus the completion of the project will help not only pedestrians, but also reduce traffic congestion which was caused by people who were crossing the road," Prof Mbarawa said.
According to Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), the six month project has cost 1.2b/- .
Currently, the contractor, SKOL Building Contractors Limited is finalising the construction of a fence across the road so that all people can use the bridge to cross the road.
The work will be completed within a week.

about 200 factories on Dar-China plan

AT least 200 factories are planned for launching in the country within the next three years with China’s support, a move that will boost Tanzania’s drive to become an industrial nation.
The Head of Communications in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ms Mindi Kasiga, told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the factories were expected to generate 200,000 employment opportunities.

Ms Kasiga was briefing reporters about a one-day working visit by China’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Wang Yi, next Monday. She said during his visit, Mr Wang will meet with President John Magufuli and hold official talks with his host, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Augustine Mahiga, on cooperation between the two countries. Ms Kasiga said the two ministers will discuss China’s plan on assisting Tanzania to realise its industrialisation dream.

She explained that in December 2015, during the Sixth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit held in Johannesburg, Tanzania was selected among four countries in Africa to be supported by China in realising industrialisation.

Other countries are Kenya, Ethiopia ad South Africa. “Under the Sixth FOCAC action plan at least 200 factories are expected to be set up before 2020 and will generate 200,000 employments,” she said.

The ministry’s Spokesperson said the industrilisation plan was crucial for the country because it is in line with the second Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP) and President John Magufuli’s initiatives of turning Tanzania into an industrial country.

She said the small and medium scale factories will be set up across the country, noting that Tanzania has opted for labour intensive factories to generate employment to majority of Tanzania.

Ms Kasiga, however, said that apart from industrial development plan, the two ministers will also hold talks on other infrastructure projects of which China has committed itself to support Tanzania, among others, improvement of Tanzania- Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), construction of Bagamoyo Port and Central Line.

Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ earlier yesterday, the Ambassador of China in Tanzania, Dr Lu Youqing, said Minister Wang’s visit will enhance bilateral cooperation which includes implementation of agreements entered between the sides. Mr Wang follows diplomatic tradition - making Tanzania and the African continent his first overseas destination in 2017.

China is the second largest investor and trading partner with Tanzania. The investments have not only boosted the country’s economic growth but also has created over 150,000 direct and over 350,000 indirect employment. China’s investments in the country focuses on various areas including railway, ports, buildings, roads, gas pipelines and natural gas power generation plants.

Caritas workers they are still in Malawi prison

THE fate of eight Tanzanians who were arrested in Malawi late last year suspected to be spying in that country’s uranium mine still hangs in balance with efforts still underway to release them from Mzuzu Prison where they are being held
Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister, Dr Augustine Mahiga, told the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ yesterday that the Tanzanian government was still in touch with authorities in Lilongwe on the release of the Tanzanians.

“There is no new information yet in regard to this matter. Our diplomatic mission in Lilongwe is still working on it,” Dr Mahiga said in a telephone interview.

Reports from Malawi had indicated that the Tanzanians were to be arraigned on January 4, this year, for criminal trespass at the Kayerekera uranium mine.

Early this week, Malawi’s Songwe border in-charge Yusuf Shaibu and Tanzania’s Kasumulu border Deputy Immigration Officer Daniel Magwaza and his assistant John Njirakiza held discussions with Malawi security agents from Karonga at Songwe border.

On Thursday, last week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, explained in a statement that the eight Tanzanians are workers of Caritas Tanzania, an aid agency of the Catholic Church.

The officials are based in Songea, Ruvuma Region. Media reports from Malawi last week alleged that authorities in that country had arrested eight Tanzanian ‘spies’ near the Kayerekera uranium mine.

Almuntazir schools shows positive response towards president says

Following the order of Hon. President John Magufuri Alcohol to ensure it does not mashaura all in, ensure primary and secondary schools are self-sufficient with benches for the year 2016, various stakeholders have continued to support the President in order to be able to reach that goal.

In the history of the original schools in the country will not be able to stop mentioning that Almuntazir is the oldest school in the country, where earlier schools started with kindergarten/chekechekea for over forty (40) years ago, starting with 150 wasiozidi students in 1975.
